The Baltimore Orioles demoted right-hander Grayson Rodriguez to Triple-A Norfolk after his rough outing in Friday’s 12-2 loss to the Texas Rangers, the team announced Saturday. Here’s what you need to know:

This season is about winning for the Orioles, and Rodriguez hasn’t given the club a chance to win in roughly five of his 10 starts. The other five have been solid, but he hasn’t been able to complete six innings in any start and has been removed in the fourth three times. That’s taxing a bullpen that is among the best in baseball but also has thrown among the most innings this year. — Connolly

Improve his command, especially his fastball command, according to manager Brandon Hyde, who said he wants to see Rodriguez have better command with, and confidence in, his fastball and also show enough confidence in his breaking pitches that he can throw those in fastball counts to keep batters off balance. There are several options, including promoting a lefty from Triple A, such as Bruce Zimmermann, Drew Rom or Cole Irvin (although Irvin can’t return to the Orioles for another week unless he replaces an injured player). But the most likely scenario is that right-hander Austin Voth moves into the rotation. He threw 3 ⅔ innings of one-run ball in replace of Rodriguez on Friday and was good in the rotation in the second half of last year. — Connolly

The Orioles entered Friday’s game on a red-hot streak after a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays and winning two of three games against the New York Yankees on the road. Rodriguez last pitched a week ago in Toronto, striking out six batters and allowing two runs over five innings.

On Friday night, the 23-year-old gave up two-run homers to Leody Taveras in the second inning and Robbie Grossman in the fourth. Corey Seager added a grand slam later in the fourth that gave Texas a 9-1 lead and ended Rodriguez’s outing.

Despite Friday’s tough loss, the Orioles still hold the second-best record in the majors at 33-18. Their American League East rival Tampa Bay Rays lead the league at 38-15.
